Fort Sumter, home to the opening shots of the American Civil War, maintains its looming presence in the harbor of Charleston, South Carolina. This photo was taken from Charleston's Battery, where the South's wealthiest citizens cheered the Confederates as they began shelling the Union-held Fort.
